Overview
OpenLenz ("we", "our", or "us") is a privacy-first camera application for iOS. This Privacy Policy explains how we handle information in connection with your use of the OpenLenz app and our website at openlenz.app.
We built OpenLenz with a simple principle: your creative work belongs to you. The app saves recordings directly to your device's Camera Roll and does not transmit video or photo content to our servers under any circumstance.
The short version: OpenLenz does not collect, store, or sell your videos, photos, or any personally identifying information. No account is required to use the app.
Data We Collect
OpenLenz is designed to work entirely on your device. The information we may collect is limited and aggregated:
| Data Type | What It Is | Why We Collect It |
|---|---|---|
| Crash Reports | Technical error logs generated when the app crashes unexpectedly | To identify and fix bugs that affect app stability |
| Aggregate Analytics | Anonymous feature usage counts (e.g., how often a format is selected). No identifiers attached. | To understand which features are most useful and guide future development |
| Purchase Records | Transaction details processed entirely by Apple via the App Store | To verify your one-time purchase and unlock the full app |
| Support Correspondence | Email content you send to us if you request help | To respond to your support request |
We do not collect any of the following:
- Video recordings or photos you capture with OpenLenz
- Your name, email address, or any account credentials (no account required)
- Location data, GPS coordinates, or geolocation metadata
- Contacts, calendar entries, or other personal device data
- Device identifiers used for advertising or cross-app tracking
App Permissions
OpenLenz requests the following device permissions to deliver its core functionality. You control these permissions through iOS Settings at any time.
| Permission | Purpose |
|---|---|
| Camera | Required to capture video and apply lens selection (0.5×, 1×, 2×, 3×, 5×). All processing happens on-device. |
| Microphone | Required to record audio alongside video. Audio is saved locally and never transmitted. |
| Photo Library | Required to save your finished recordings directly to your Camera Roll in your chosen formats. |
Revoking any permission in iOS Settings will limit corresponding features within OpenLenz. The app will not function without Camera and Microphone access.
How We Use Data
The limited data we do collect is used exclusively for the following purposes:
- Diagnosing and fixing technical issues to maintain app stability
- Understanding aggregate feature usage to prioritise development decisions
- Processing and verifying your App Store purchase
- Responding to support requests you initiate
We do not use your data to build advertising profiles, serve targeted advertisements, or sell insights to third parties.
Data Sharing
We do not sell, rent, or trade any user data. We may share limited technical data with the following categories of service providers solely to operate the app:
- Apple Inc. — App Store distribution, in-app purchase processing, and optional crash reporting through Apple's standard frameworks. Apple's privacy practices are governed by Apple's Privacy Policy.
- Crash analytics providers — Anonymised, non-identifiable crash logs may be forwarded to a diagnostics service to help us triage bugs. No video content, personal data, or device identifiers used for tracking are included.
We may disclose information if required by law or to protect the rights, property, or safety of OpenLenz, our users, or others. Any such disclosure would be limited to what is strictly necessary.
Data Retention
Crash reports and aggregate analytics are retained for up to 12 months before being automatically deleted. Support correspondence is retained for as long as needed to resolve your request, and then deleted within 24 months.
Purchase transaction records are retained as required by applicable financial and tax regulations.
You may request deletion of any data associated with a support request by contacting us directly (see the Contact section below).
Your Rights
Depending on where you reside, you may have rights regarding your personal data. These may include:
- Access — Request a copy of the personal data we hold about you
- Correction — Ask us to correct inaccurate or incomplete data
- Deletion — Request that we delete your data (subject to legal obligations)
- Objection — Object to certain types of processing
- Portability — Receive your data in a structured, machine-readable format
Because OpenLenz requires no account and collects no identifying information by default, the practical scope of these rights is narrow. If you have contacted our support team and want us to delete that correspondence, please reach out and we will do so promptly.
California residents: OpenLenz does not sell personal information as defined under the California Consumer Privacy Act (CCPA) and does not engage in cross-context behavioural advertising.
Children's Privacy
OpenLenz is not directed at children under the age of 13 (or the applicable age of digital consent in your jurisdiction). We do not knowingly collect personal information from children. If you believe a child has provided us with personal information, please contact us and we will delete it promptly.
Policy Changes
We may update this Privacy Policy from time to time. When we do, we will revise the "Last updated" date at the top of this page. For material changes, we will provide additional notice through the app or on our website.
Your continued use of OpenLenz after any changes take effect constitutes your acceptance of the revised policy.
